MAGNIFICENT ANTIQUE CHINESE CELADON CONG VASE. Southern Song Dynasty (12th - 13th Century). Exquisite example of the Song Dynasty's appreciation of Neolithic forms. Potted in the shape of an ancient jade cong, the green celadon glaze richly covers the exterior, pooling in the recesses and thinning on the edges adding understated and elegant depth to the surface.
The combination of the well balanced form, and superb coloration is utterly magnificent. The surface is additionally suffused with an extensive network of dark crackles, much appreciated by collectors, and forms sublime, heavy drips near the slightly raised foot. The more one explores this superb piece, the more the tasteful mastery reveals itself.Of exceptionally strong and handsome form. Congs were tubes with a circular inner sections and square outer sections. The outer surface was divided vertically or horizontally such that the whole defined a hollow cylinder embedded in a partial rectangular block. It is said that the square form represented the earth, and the round form represented the heavens.
In the ritualistic cong, the two were esoterically united. During the Song Dynasty, the Chinese took a great interest in these ancient artifacts, producing items such as this cong to honor the ancient traditions. Both the Longquan and Guan kilns produced beautiful cong form vases.
Fine examples of Song Dynasty ceramic congs are becoming increasingly rare on the open market, as they are held by wealthy collectors and the world's finest museums. Two examples may be viewed here, one particularly similar vase is held at the Tokyo National Museum. In excellent antique condition with some areas of light surface wear and patina commensurate with age. We note that the foot is slightly encrusted with earthen material or contact mineralization. This highly refined cong form vase measures approximately 7.25 inches tall and 6 inches wide.
