An exceptionally rare excavated Song Dynasty 960 AD to 1179 AD Ge Ware Cong shaped Vase with celadon coloured triple crackled glaze. This vase is completely handmade and close examination of the thickness of the biscuit viewed from the rim and from directly underneath the vase will reveal minute asymmetries attesting to the hand manufacture of this ancient vase. The glaze is an exceptionally delicate pale celadon green- this effect of a slight green is subtle and exceedingly beautiful in person. The cracklure here is in three colours.
There is a darker grey, a golden yellow and then additional hairline almost colorless hairlines as well. This known as gold thread and iron wire describing the larger and smaller networks of differing colored crackle within this very special ancient glaze. The beautiful glaze extends also inside the whole vase as does the cracklure. Buried for almost a millennia the vase has some mineral encrustation showing with drusy formation of crystals in patches across the whole and inclusive of the inside of the vase.
There is concretion of soil occurring inside and outside from the interaction of the soil, the burial and the environment. This is solid and has now over time become part of this rare surviving excavated vase. Examination of the drusy and soil concretions concludes these to be consistent and commensurate with the age of this vase. On the base the one character official seal mark of the Song dynasty can be clearly made out. This vase measures 9 9/16" tall by 4 3/16" wide by 4 1/8 deep approximately (243mm x 106mm x 105mm). There are no repairs and no damage. This ancient vase makes an astonishing display.
